In case you haven’t heard there’s a revolution brewing in Spain. The people are taking to the streets in protest of their 20%-30% unemployment rate, housing crisis, rising inflation, increasing cost of living and government corruption. The protests started on May 15, 2011 and were organized by a group called Democracia Real YA [english translation: Real Democracy Already!].
Since then, more citizens have been joining in and organizing even more protests throughout various cities in Spain including Barcelona, Valencia and Madrid. The growing network of camps [called an 'acampada' in spanish] are so far fairly peaceful and organized and show no signs of stopping.
These photos from the camp in Barcelona [acampadabcn] capture the beginning of something that can easily spread throughout the rest of Europe and even the U.S. if the economy continues on its downward spiral and corruption continues to escalate. Those are symptoms that we all seem to have in common at this point in time regardless of nation. In our connected world what affects one surely affects the next so stay tuned.
