This short documentary presents the issue that lead to the piracy situation in Somalia, an angle which is rarely discussed. It explains why the local community has gotten together to protect the shoreline from the hazardous dumping of toxic and nuclear waste by foreign vessels which has been going on since at least 1991. The evidence of this appeared on the beaches in 2004 when many containers filled with toxic waste were washed up by the waves.
This radioactive waste has been accumulating under the seabed of Somalia and other developing African nations and it is devastating the waters, local fishing industry and food supply so many people depend on. Check out this video for a timeline of events that lead up to now. It even features Somali-Canadian artist and activist K’NAAN briefly discussing what’s going on.
